Adichie – The Danger of a Single Story:
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ted talk talks about the problems of telling stories with one sided perspectives because it can lead to bias and misunderstandings. In the social sciences it is important to tell stories from different perspectives because then you will have a better understanding of the situation. The advice Adichie offers is to look at different kinds of perspectives and sources to understand the situation better. I will make sure to use this advice in my work this semester by making sure I use different sources so my work doesn’t have a one sided perspective.
Tan & Lee
The culture and subcultures presented in the reading are the experiences many Asian Americans and immigrants from other countries face after coming to America. In mother tongue the author talks about her and her mother’s experiences in America because of how her mother speaks english. In Mute In An English-Only World it talks about the experiences of a Korean immigrant in America. Lee talks about his mother’s struggle with English which made her feel like she was mute because she couldn’t speak English like everyone else. An information I would have liked the author to include in mother tongue is what her mother’s life was like in China. I will approach my transcultural interview by asking questions about culture and personal experiences so I can understand their culture better.
